Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to contest particular calls made by the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
