Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has started implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo shared with employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video received significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the language has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, because the restriction is based on individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.
Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
