The national government stated it would offer partial relief to countless food stamp beneficiaries as the continuing federal closure neared a historic length.
Benefit Decrease Details
Amid mounting uncertainty for the approximately 42 million people enrolled in the SNAP, the Department of Agriculture confirmed it would use emergency money to continue assistance, albeit at just 50% of the standard level recipients normally get.
Money for the program officially ran out on Saturday due to the US government shutdown, now in its 34th day with no sign of ending.
Legal Developments
The revelation came in a legal document after earlier refusals to release urgent funding on claimed legal grounds. A federal judge had decided the government could not deny program funds due to the shutdown.
Following the legal directive, the executive branch announced it would be "pleased" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Execution Hurdles
Officials noted that money could start flowing by midweek, but emphasized the need for additional clarification from the courts on how to lawfully reallocate resources for SNAP benefits.
- Various local governments have warned it will take time or even longer periods to distribute assistance to low-income families.
- Crowds have been observed at pantries throughout the United States.
- In various regions, stadium parking lots were transformed into help locations.
State Emergency Measures
Multiple authorities, such as New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced emergency declarations to supply temporary funds for benefits. However, these allocations were expected to be a limited percentage of the normal government funding.
The federal costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion monthly across the United States.
