The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
