Mount Mahameru Eruption in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Evacuations

The nation's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing several villages with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the maximum level.

The mountain in the province of East Java released blistering plumes of hot ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that travelled up to 7km down its slopes multiple times from midday to evening, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to increase the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the highest, the agency said. No casualties have been reported.

Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most endangered in the district of Lumajang were evacuated to government shelters, as mentioned by a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.

He stated that increased activity of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday led authorities to expand the danger zone to 8km from the crater. Residents were advised to stay clear from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as scorching gases flowed down the volcano's sides.

Videos on social media showed a thick plume of volcanic dust sweeping through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with ash and water, escaped to temporary shelters or departed for alternative secure locations.

Local media indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to save about 178 individuals trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The party comprised 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an official with the protected area.

“They are currently safe at the Ranu Kumbolo station,” a spokesperson stated in a recorded message. He said the station was located 4.5km from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed traveling to the southeast direction. Inclement conditions and rain forced the group to spend the night there, he added.

Semeru, also known as Mahameru, has erupted many occasions in the past 200 years. However, as is the situation with many of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, thousands of people continue to live on its productive highlands.

Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and hundreds others were injured and settlements were submerged in thick mud. The event led to the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their houses.

The country, an archipelago of more than 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanism.
