Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
