Leeds Hold Liverpool at Bay to Earn Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield
A pair of unbeaten runs remained in place at Anfield, but solely one side could derive real satisfaction from the outcome. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook strategy of frustrating and containing Liverpool, with the first scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering limitations behind the current champions' latest recovery.
Defensive Masterclass Secures Vital Point
A drab goalless draw, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely due to the defensive solidity of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the Anfield side's failure to break down a compact Leeds unit. Liverpool were reduced to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of discontent echoed around the famous ground at the full-time signal on a sluggish performance.
"If I don't utilise the entire squad and we have a fixture list like this, I would not do this," Daniel Farke stated. "For a player like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his recent history was difficult. He is in red-hot shape but it's important I look after him and sometimes the mind needs to prevail over the heart."
Liverpool's Frustration in Front of Goal
Liverpool initially showed more energy and precision than in recent outings, with the right wing-back prominent on the right side. However, golden chances were scarce. Their primary openings in the opening half involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat exchange with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and forced a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The Leeds' goalkeeper spilled the shot, needing a crucial block from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz tapping in the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later raced through onto a ball over the top but was held by Jaka Bijol; despite staying on his feet, his shouts for a penalty were waved away.
Spurned Chances Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he failed to find the target with his clearest opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the striker miscued a header that struck the Perri while with an unguarded net.
For Leeds, their most notable opportunity came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian keeper sent a wayward clearance straight to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort back down the centre was gathered by the recovering Alisson.
Scrappy Final Stages
The match descended into a scrappy affair, devoid on quality. Dominik Szoboszlai, back from suspension, forced a save from Perri from distance. The subsequent rebound resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving the hosts a set-piece in a dangerous area, which Wirtz wasted into the defence.
Slot introduced a triple substitution to bring impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk came close to nodding his side in front from a set-piece, his effort flying just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had extended his goal run for the visitors in the closing stages, but his tap-in was flagged out for a tight offside. Ultimately, both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
