Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
