Ethiopia Receives Cultural Treasures Following a 100-Year Residence in German Hands
Around Twelve cultural items were ceremoniously given back to Ethiopia after staying by a household from Germany for in excess of a century.
The treasures, first acquired in the early twentieth century by Germany's then-envoy to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were handed over on Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at the university in Addis Ababa.
This collection contained royal crowns, protective shields and paintings, each regarded as historically important in Ethiopia.
"The items still represent a symbol of the lasting and amicable ties between Germany and Ethiopia," said Ferdinand von Weyhe, Germany's representative to Ethiopia.
Professor a professor, whose parent was delivered during the family's diplomatic posting in the nation, handed over the objects at a ceremony joined by the Minister of Tourism the tourism official.
He stated that the family's intention to restore the artefacts was to "showcase their splendor with the people and preserve the heritage and history connected to my father's birth."
These artefacts were either considered donations or buys, as stated by the relatives.
"We would like to express gratitude to Professor Weiss's household for practically demonstrating their sincere appreciation for the nation by diligently maintaining these artifacts and vitally guaranteeing their return to their rightful country," commented the official.
She continued that the items would shortly be available to the people for study and educational purposes, calling the move a milestone in preserving the nation's national treasures.
"Actions will continue to return ancient artifacts that are held in the hands of private persons and organizations around the world," she affirmed.
During colonialism in Africa, many of traditional artefacts were taken.
This call by African countries for the return of taken artefacts has been responded to by a degree of success in lately - though a number of items are only on temporary return.
In 2022, the German government was the initial state to repatriate some of the well-known Benin artifacts to the Nigerian people as part of an effort to confront its "complex past."
