The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The clip, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to defend and support this national charter," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip reportedly provoke a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats released a joint statement denouncing the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our nation with great loyalty and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to make certain the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these radical digital publications and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement added.
Officials' Strong Response
The officials who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this nation and took an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must come together and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."
More Political Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "You have sitting members of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
