California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing dryness. This milestone follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Map Shows Zero Drought
A recent update from the federal monitoring program illustrated that the entire state is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.
From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January eliminated those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status should not be confused with having no water worries. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation place it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to preserving this precious water balance for the months to come.
