Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with his partner, disclosed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest announcement deepens the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
