Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior official stated the incident made him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
