A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
