During the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in a place that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing an interview the next morning, yet, as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused since a woman spotted me loitering in the city and inquired whether I needed help. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the local university – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one filled rolls she had from her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to sleep.

With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she accepted as a young woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people with such compassion.
